Cooking fish can seem daunting to anyone who has never tried it before, but with the right recipe and a few fresh ingredients it can be a simple and painless process. A good fish to try cooking for the first time is salmon. If you have ever wanted to know how to poach salmon then you have come to the right place.

The nice thing about poaching salmon is that it takes less than 15 minutes to prepare. This makes it a great dinner choice for those busy days when you don't have a lot of extra time to make a more elaborate meal. And the only equipment you will need is a saute pan with a lid, a spatula and your stove top. Easy!

Perfectly Poached Salmon

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 lbs of salmon fillets with the pin bones removed
  • Salt
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine (your choice)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • A few slices of yellow onion OR a nice shallot, peeled and sliced thin
  • Fresh dill
  • Fresh parsley
  • Fresh thyme
  • Ground black pepper

Directions:

1. Sprinkle the salmon fillets with the salt.

2. In the saute pan combine the wine, water, onion and fresh herbs. Bring these to a simmer over medium heat.

3. Place the salmon fillets in the pan with the skin side down.

4. Cover the pan and cook the salmon between 5-10 minutes. Keep in mind that thinner fillets will need less time to cook than thicker ones.

5. Serve the fillets with a sprinkling of the freshly ground black pepper.

You could also add some warm rolls and an easy side salad of leafy greens to complement the salmon. Now you have a quick, delicious and healthy meal to share with your family.
